Hong Kongโ€™s leader has expressed his profound sorrow over the death of former Chinese premier Zhu Rongji, paying tribute to him for supporting the city in challenging times including the 1997 Asian financial crisis.

In a statement late on Wednesday night, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said he was sincerely grateful for Zhuโ€™s care and support for Hong Kongโ€™s economic and social development over the years, while noting his commitment to the โ€œone country, two systemsโ€ governing principle.

โ€œDuring his premiership, Mr Zhu had supported Hong Kong in staying united and striving to leverage its strengths amid such challenges as the Asian financial crisis, resolutely upholding the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong as an international financial centre,โ€ Lee said.

โ€œI am profoundly saddened by the passing of former premier Zhu. On behalf of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, I extend my deepest condolences to his family.โ€
