Hong Kong Olympic gold medallist Vivian Kong Man-wai has declared her bid to run for the tourism constituency in the coming Legislative Council election and has applied to give up her Canadian passport, pledging to continue to โbring honourโ to the city.
The 31-year-old fencing star was flanked by tycoons such as Sino Group chairman Daryl Ng Win Kong and Kerry Properties chairman Kuok Khoon Hua as she submitted her nominations on Monday.
Miramar Group chief operations officer Alan Chan Chung-yee and Travel Industry Council chairman Tommy Tam Kwong-shun also made appearances to show their support.
Kong said she was grateful for the opportunity and the support of the tourism industry, adding that she hoped to โshow the worldโ how great Hong Kong was.
โAs an athlete, I had the opportunity to represent Hong Kong, and I tried my best. Now I just want another way to do my best for Hong Kong because I really love the people, I really love the city and it deserves so much more,โ she said.
The Post reported on Saturday that Kong, who won gold in the womenโs individual epee at the Paris Olympic Games last year and retired from her sports career right after, had suspended her duties as assistant external affairs manager at the Hong Kong Jockey Club.
Kong sidestepped questions about whether she would resign from the Jockey Club should she be elected. She also said โnothing is permanentโ if she decided to enter politics.
