Costly Building Work Christchurch City Council Insisted On Isn’t Necessary Says MBIE

A decision made by the Ministry of Building Innovation and Employment (MBIE), meansĀ costly building work Christchurch City Council insisted on, is not necessary. A determinationĀ was sought from MBIE by a Christchurch man after council staff decided his two multi-unit buildings didn’t meet the building code. David Townshend submitted an application to CCC in late May 2024, for a building consent to construct seven units in Riccarton. The council denied the consent. ā€œWe’re not having the right conversation about insurance.ā€ That from Christchurch based insurance claims preparer, Dean Lester, who says following the LA fires and recent comments in the media about insurers pulling out of some areas in Aotearoa, a much bigger conversation is needed. ā€œThere’s every type of insurance cover available anywhere in the world,ā€ he says. ā€œWhat we have in New Zealand is a lack of innovation, competition and regulation.ā€ Lester says insurance is a key part of a modern society, and if it isn’t available, there will be a breakdown in the financial and broader structural makeup of that society. He says this is illustrated by the recent moratorium issued by the California Insurance Commissioner, Ricardo Lara, who has ordered insurance companies to have a one-year mo...

Students then work on the projects with local community groups and organisations to answer the research questions. They then used an internationally recognised hedonic pricing model which figures out how different features of a house, like its size, location, or amenities, affect its ...
