Ghana takes transatlantic slavery case to UN

Ghanaian President John Mahama wants to push the proposal, which is supported by 40 African Union (AU) members, at the United Nations in March. He says the initiative is "firmly grounded in international law" and, together with the endorsement of the African Union, Ghana will formally table the resolution before the UN General Assembly.   The resolution is just the first step, Mahama said on the sidelines of the recently concluded AU summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. With wide support amongst AU nations, Mahama says the "truth about the story of the transatlantic slave trade must be told" and recognized as the "gravest crime against humanity."In March Ghanaian leader John Mahama will speak at the UN armed with an AU-backed resolution Image: Jeenah Moon/REUTERS The 'gravest crime' in human...

Trump ends some tariffs, imposes new 10% global one

After the US Supreme Court on Friday struck down sweeping tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, the White House announced the end of certain duties enacted under a law used to address national emergencies.  The White House said those tariffs "shall no longer be in effect and, as ‌soon as practicable, shall no longer be collected." Undeterred by the Supreme Court ruling, Trump said later on Friday in a post on his Truth Social platform that he had the "Great Honor" to sign an order imposing temporary 10% tariffs on global imports to be "effective almost immediately." The move comes after the conservative-majority Supreme Court said the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which Trump had originally used to impose tariffs, "does not authorize the president to...

Faltering fighter jet deal casts doubt on EU defense plans

The simmering spat between France and Germany bubbled over publicly when German Chancellor Friedrich Merz told the Machtwechsel podcast that the collaboration to build a nuclear-capable fighter jet with France is "not what we currently need in the German military." The project, known as the Future Combat Air System (FCAS), was launched in 2017 with then-Chancellor Angela Merkel and still-in-post French President Emmanuel Macron, but now looks in jeopardy. Europe is scrambling to become a resurgent military force in its own right due to significantly diminished trust in the Trump administration's commitment to European defense. Germany pulling back from the FCAS project could be seen as a serious setback to progress. "The Germans should not make the same mistake as the French did and iso...

Austria convicts climber over girlfriend’s death on mountain

An amateur mountaineer in Austria has been found guilty of manslaughter over the death of his girlfriend.  She froze to death near the peak of the Grossglockner mountain, Austria's highest summit, after he left her alone to fetch help. The court in the Austrian city of Innsbruck gave Thomas P. a five-month suspended sentence on Thursday and fined him €9,400 ($11,100) for gross negligence.  The case is unusual because while climbing accidents are common, prosecutions over them are rare. (moved this up from near bottom) Series of mistakes on mountain ended in girlfriend's death The court heard how the couple had fallen behind in their schedule when climbing the Grossglockner in January 2025.  The woman had become exhausted and was unable to keep going, some 50 meters (54 yards) beneath...
