Where to buy snow skin mooncakes in Hong Kong now that Taipan Bread & Cakes has closed

In June, another Hong Kong food stalwart fell victim to the cityโ€™s economic downturn as Taipan Bread & Cakes, a bakery chain with more than 40 years of history and which pioneered the snow skin mooncake, closed its doors.

In 1989, the company created its popular chilled mooncake, which โ€“ unlike classic mooncakes baked with a golden, lard-rich crust โ€“ feature a glutinous rice flour skin with a mochi-like texture. They are not baked, but instead steamed and served chilled.

Traditional mooncakes also tend to use dense fillings like sweet lotus seed paste, red bean paste and mixed nuts. Snow skin versions usually feature lighter ones such as custard, fruit purรฉes, chocolate or even ice cream. They are also known for their vibrant colours and artistic designs, appealing to modern tastes.

Snow skin mooncakes are seen as less sweet, less greasy alternatives to traditional versions, making them popular among the younger generations and those who prefer a lighter treat during the Mid-Autumn Festival.

The sudden closure of Taipan has affected hundreds of former employees owed millions in wages and also leaves a void in the market for those who love and adore the soft, chewy mooncakes.

If you are missing this nostalgic Mid-Autumn treat, read on to see where you can still find snow skin mooncakes in town.
