‘We train like pros, but don’t get paid’


The ritual plays out every evening, as darkness falls in the small white house in a quiet neighborhood of Ingolstadt, in the Bavaria region of southern Germany. Playtime, bath, baby food, diaper change, a story, a cuddle and then off to bed. On this January evening, 16-month-old Sacha had accomplished all his tasks, helped along by his mothers, Lore and Marion.

However, these particular young parents had one routine more. Like every other day of the week, Lore Baudrit quietly left the house for her ice hockey training. A few days later, she would be in Milan, leading the French women’s team in its first-ever Winter Olympic Games.

Earlier in the afternoon, the 1.90-meter-tall athlete greeted us with Sacha in her arms, lifting him high in the doorway, between her physical training session and her departure to her club, ERC Ingolstadt.
