Germany World Cup shirts run out of letter V

Almost a week into the tournament, World Cup fever has very much taken hold in Germany, with the Nationalmannschaft's 7-1 thumping of minnows Curacao on Sunday looking all the more impressive in light of Spain's goalless draw with Cape Verde on Monday. You see, these group-stage games against smaller nations aren't as easy as you might think! Strikers Deniz Undav and Kai Havertz both scored against Curacao, but there's been some bad news for any Germany fans wanting to have those names printed on the backs of their replica shirts after the official kit provider ran out of letter Vs – with midfielder Aleksandar Pavlovic's name also affected. "The DFB [German Football Federation] and its partner 11teamsports are responsible for shirt names," kit manufacturer Adidas told the SID sports new...

New York Knicks win first NBA championship in 53 years

New York Knicks captain Jalen Brunson scored 45 points on Saturday night to lead his team back from a 16-point early game deficit and defeat the San Antonio Spurs by a score of 94-90 to win the coveted National Basketball Association (NBA) championship. The game-five victory was the fourth comeback win in the Knicks 4-1 run in the best-of-seven series. Hoisting the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy after the game, team owner James Dolan shouted, "I want to say something to New York. Hey New York! I'm sorry it took so long! But here we are… and hopefully it won't take that long again!" "I don't know what I am feeling," a teary-eyed Brunson told reporters after the game. "I'm in awe. I don't know… whenever someone counted us out, we found a way to come back and do something about it." ...

EU, Ukraine start formal accession talks after Orban delay

The EU and Ukraine on Monday formally opened the first stage of accession negotiations with a view to Kyiv one day joining the 28-member bloc.  Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 turbocharged an idea that at one point was contentious among the country's electorate. Why had Hungary's former government delayed the process?  For the past two years, the process had been on hold. That's because starting it requires unanimous approval from existing EU governments, and Hungary's former Prime Minister Viktor Orban was blocking the move.  The talks had already started on a technical level despite the Hungarian obstruction.  Hungary's new prime minister, Peter Magyar, recently announced that he had reached an agreement with Ukraine on measures to strengthen the rights of the ethnic...

Swiss voters reject population cap proposal

Voters in Switzerland on Sunday have voted against a proposal to cap the Alpine nation's population at 10 million by 2050. According to final results published by national broadcaster SRF the proposal has been rejected by 54.8% against 45.2% in favor. Under Switzerland's direct democracy system, referendums are mostly binding in their effect. The proposal was put forward by the Swiss People's Party (SVP), which has the most seats in the Swiss parliament. Currently, Switzerland has a population of 9.1 million. Divisive population proposal Those in favor of the SVP proposal say that immigration to Switzerland, where foreigners make up more than 25% of the population, has caused the small country to become overcrowded and clogged services. However, its critics say that if adopted, it w...
