Amsterdam's Vondel Church, near one of the city's most popular parks, was largely destroyed in a fire just as New Year celebrations were in full swing, local media reported on Thursday. The former Catholic Church's roughly 50-metre-high (164-feet) tower and the roof collapsed in the blaze, which an emergency services spokesperson said had made the 154-year-old structure "no longer salvageable." "It is a very intense and terrible fire in this monumental church," lamented Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema. Fire broke out minutes after fireworks The blaze was first reported shortly after midnight and was quickly escalated to a major incident, with firefighters calling in assistance from other regions of the Netherlands. The Dutch navy deployed its 60-meter-high aerial work platform to help t...

In India, youths are quiet as Gen Z protests rock South Asia – DW – 12/31/2025

"Gen Z is a generation of convenience," Harshita V. said, referring to her cohort's political activism, as she sipped her strawberry-flavored kombucha.   When India's Supreme Court ordered the removal of stray dogs from the streets of New Delhiin August, she said, a friend of hers organized a protest. Scores signed up online. But when the protest took place the next day, only four or five people showed up. "They rally online," Harshita said. "But, when it comes to finishing something they have started, the enthusiasm fizzles out." This anecdote set the tone for the conversation on Gen Z youths in India and their politics on a cold afternoon in late December among a small group of young people in the capital, New Delhi. A melting pot of political opinions India has the world's largest ...

Iran’s economic crisis, political discontent threaten regime – DW – 12/31/2025

A wave of protests is sweeping across Iran, which is mired in a deep economic crisis marked by an unprecedented drop in the value of the rial and surging inflation. But the demonstrations, which began with a merchants' strike in Tehran on December 28 and have grown as students joined the movement, go beyond the country's economic woes. Experts say the protests — the most significant challenge to the Islamic regime since the "Women, Life, Freedom" movement of 2022 — are a reflection of widespread and growing political discontent and anger at the government. How China’s C-drama streams hooked millions worldwide – DW – 12/26/2025

Jolene Foo's route to Chinese drama fandom happened after she moved from her native Malaysia to Norway in her late 20s. Foo, who grew up as a "third-generation Chinese kid," was looking for a way to reconnect with her homeland. Her friends recommended Chinese dramas, or C-dramas for short.  "What really drew me in was the cultural dimension," she told DW. "As someone who is of the Chinese diaspora, watching C-dramas became a way of reconnecting with my roots." Tanvir Khan had just finished his secondary school exam in 2018 and was surfing Facebook. He came across a short video from the serialized C-drama "The Story of Yanxi Palace." He was enthralled. "I don't know whether I can explain it properly or not, but you know when you see a scene and something inside you just clicks?" Khan, wh...

Japan’s ‘nengajo’ New Year card tradition losing its charm – DW – 12/30/2025

The time-honored Japanese tradition of sending "nengajo" New Year cards is fading fast, with modern-day Japanese too busy as the year comes to a close and happy to rely on technology to send festive greetings.   And while some admit that it is slightly sad to see a staple of the season disappearing, most just shrug. The sending of decorative "nengajo" has been on a steady decline for several decades, falling from a peak of nearly 4.5 billion cards being issued in 2004 to a mere 1.07 billion in 2025. When the figures are released for 2026, they are expected to show that the decline has continued. "This is the first year that I never sent any 'nengajo' at all," said Sumie Kawakami, an academic who lives in Yamanashi Prefecture in central Japan. "I have been slowly weaning myself off send...

National pride meets box office success – DW – 12/30/2025

A Hindi-language spy thriller movie named "Dhurandhar" released earlier this month has become a major box office success in India but also divided opinions.   The 3.5-hour-long film features popular actor Ranveer Singh playing an Indian spy who infiltrates criminal networks in Pakistan's sprawling Karachi city to neutralize threats to Indian national security. The drama is set against the backdrop of tensions between archrivals India and Pakistan, two nuclear-armed South Asian neighbors who earlier this year exchanged intense missile, drone and artillery fire for days. The film has been a huge success at the box office this year and has drawn praise for its plot and action sequences. What do critics say? But critics say it is just the latest in a wave of films — like "The Kashmir File...
