Prime Minister Christopher Luxon draws the attention of famous menswear commentator Derek Guy

One called it ā€œone of the weirdest things I’ve seenā€.

Others highlighted the outfit’s similarities to everything from Joey Tribbiani wearing all of Chandler Bing’s clothes on Friends to Yohji Yamamoto’s fall 2016 menswear collection.

Many suggested the T-shirt was a smart, strategic choice, ā€œguarding his clothes from the sauceā€.

Some social media users took the chance to call Guy’s attention to other prime ministerial outfits they considered fashion faux pas, including an outfit where Luxon paired a tuxedo jacket, shirt and bow tie with shorts and pool slides.

Guy regularly criticises the style choices of politicians, particularly suit fit. He’s weighed in on everyone from Anthony Albanese and John Howard to Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer.

ā€œMale politicians who need the most help with their wardrobe,ā€ he told Politico. ā€œClothing missteps can cause unnecessary headlines.ā€

The T-shirt-over-suit appearance is not the first time a politician’s sausage sizzle appearance has gone viral online. A photo of John Key eating a hot dog on a stick at a 2008 A&P show has since become a popular meme online.
