Netflix K-drama Dear Hongrang: Jo Bo-ah, Lee Jae-wook in ravishing but mystifying period drama

Lead cast: Jo Bo-ah, Lee Jae-wook, Uhm Ji-won, Jung Ga-ram

Jo Bo-ah (Tale of the Nine-Tailed) and Lee Jae-wook (Alchemy of Souls) team up for the Netflix period drama Dear Hongrang, a lavishly produced mystery based on the Jang Da-hye novel Tangeum: Swallowing Gold.

Hongrang is the name of a boy born into the Min Family – a guild of powerful merchants – who disappeared as a young child, devastating his family, particularly his half-sister Jae-yi (Jo), who shared an unusually close bond with him.

Given the influence and wealth of the family, many impostors have shown up over the years but all have been readily dismissed; then, 12 years on from the disappearance, a 20-year-old man – played by Lee – appears on their doorstep.

Although he claims to have no memory of his childhood, the man is instantly embraced as the real Hongrang by everyone in the family thanks to markers on his body and other signs – everyone, that is, save for Jae-yi, who is adamant that this young man is also an impostor.
