The United States imposed another major round of sanctions on six officials in Hong Kong, including the justice secretary and outgoing police chief, over what Washington said was โtransnational repressionโ under the cityโs national security legislation.
The move on Tuesday follows previously imposed economic sanctions and other restrictions against the city after Beijing enacted the sweeping national security law in 2020 in response to the months-long social unrest the year before.
Beijing has vowed to retaliate while the Hong Kong government has also slammed US action, saying it will not be cowed by it.
